Monday 18 May 2009 - Paul C Wolfe Shelter

Shin pain was quite bad today, but managed 22 miles to give me a nice easy 5 miles into Waynesboro tomorrow where I'm going to take a day and a half off to recuperate. Hiked this afternoon with Hermes which was great as it took my mind off my shin, but also as we talked about football for a few hours.
At lunchtime today as I was sitting on some cliffs with my bag unpacked eating a peanut butter tortilla wrap, a dog ran over, slobbered on my food bag, jumped on me (headbutting me in the process) and then ran off with my red fleece jumper in its mouth. The owner eventually showed up and persuaded the dog to give the fleece back. The net result is that since I use my fleece as a pillow, I am sleeping this evening with my face resting on dried dog slobber. Don't say the trail isn't glamorous.

  1. Sounds like fun ricardo. I would have slung the dog off the cliff it had gone within a sniff of my peanut butter tortilla (sounds nice by the way, I might have one of those for my lunch tomorrow).

I liked the sound of the Sunday Dinner, I am less than surprised that fodd is playing as much a part in the trail as the hiking!

...meanwhile back at the ranch I have just about recovered from Daisy's birthday at the weekend. I wasn't quite as bad as last year, but a lot of drink was drunk, and the diversity of the spirits on offer was... well.... expected!

Looking forward to another bank holiday this weekend, Villa Newcastle on Sunday, I hope we don't send you down, I suppose an entertaining draw with Man U defeating Hull and Middlesborough losing to West Ham will be the best result for all involved!

...anyway, i'm off to bed now, so happy hiking, and speak soon.

    Andrew.

  2. Hey Sir Richard! You're about 3 days ahead of me and gaining ground fast. I am in Waynesboro tonight with my darling wife, who drove out from DC to scoop me up off the trail and transport me to civilization. She'll drop me off back on the BRP tomorrow. I think I'll cross into SNP on Sunday morning.

  5. Hey Sir Richard, I imagine you won't see this until you get to Front Royal, but I wanted to let you know that I am off the trail for a week or so. My daughter delivered my second grandson early this morning. Right now I am in Bethesda, just outside of DC, and will be flying to Boston tomorrow. I would appreciate you leaving a note in a shelter log or two for anyone who may wonder where I am.

  8. Hey Rich

Just writing to say a big thank-you for the postcard you sent us, I haven't received one for years so it was lovely returning from work to find it sitting on the table. The picture of Shenandoah National Park is beautiful. I'm very jealous and wish I was there with you, however I am almost certain I could not hack the pace and I also wouldn't fancy a bearding from you every night inside your one man tent.

Looked up your new tent on the net and it looks class. Keep going mate and give our love to Lisa.

    BRITAIN IS PROUD OF YOU!!!
